The word personality comes from the Latin term meaning ‘mask’. It derives from a time when actors wore a mask when entertaining. It’s interesting when you think about it, because most of us wear a mask to some degree or another and honestly, it’s appropriate in most situations. When one is at work or in a situation that vulnerability to emotion is not optimal, we all wear a mask. Think of when you ask someone how they are- most often the answer is “fine” or “I’m good”. Many times we know for certain that the person we asked is not good, but it’s what we say when asked.
The issue that comes into play here is that sometimes we do need to be honest about what is going on in our lives----with safe people. This past week we spoke about how God is absolute truth. When we are in alignment with His will, it’s important that we are in alignment with truth. A further issue that can come into play is that we “fool” ourselves into thinking everything is fine.
I’d encourage you to spend some time this week in trying to understand how you really are. Are you putting on a mask with everyone? Do you have a few safe people that you can lay your mask down with and be real with? Pray for God to reveal this to you and to reveal your safe people. It’s a little daunting at first, but SO WORTH IT!
