Have you gotten caught up in the media in the past year and a half?  I think most of us would not be completely honest if we say no media has impacted us. Between Covid and social justice issues and politics there was a lot to talk about and a lot to absorb.  I must admit that it was easy for me to go down a rabbit hole or two and get lost in worry. Then I read this:

You will keep in perfect peace… all whose thoughts are fixed on you! Isaiah 26:3 NLT

This scripture does not say that perfect peace will come to those whose thoughts are fixed on (insert favorite news outlet or blogger), it says that perfect peace will come to those whose thoughts are fixed on God and His goodness.  It’s a hard balance to find…..being informed while also not drowning in it.  One thing that may help is that we can employ a tactic called “thought stopping” which is taught in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.  Essentially, when a negative thought arises, one issues a command for the negative thought to stop and then comes up with a more balanced thought regarding the circumstance.  When this happens, sometimes, we can stop the cycle of spinning in fear or anxiety. It can take practice, but it can be very effective for some.

What’s a good alternative to the anxious thought that is occurring? How about a quick prayer, or a reminder to self that God is in charge?  How about processing through the facts? Sometimes a good thing to employ is distraction from the worrisome thoughts.

When I talk about this, I know that there are instances that anxiety is a medical issue and I want you to know that is not what I’m discussing. I’m referring to the anxiety of “over-exposure” to the news media and the things that they spew out as truth.  Make an attempt to limit your exposure to bad news….weigh your sources when you do expose yourself to news. If you find yourself spinning in an anxiety state, try thought stopping.  It may be a helpful tool in your wellness toolbox.

If you deal with clinical anxiety or depression, by all means, get with a therapist to learn tools to benefit you in your wellness.  If you need help finding these resources, let me know, I’d be glad to help.
